One of the most commonly used simple present verbs is ‘to be,’ or its forms. It describes nationalities, professions, places, animals, etc. Moreover, it is much more used than its rivals or their forms, namely, ‘to do, to go, or to have.’ However, since ‘to be’ is an irregular verb, it is necessary to understand its usage.

Introduction to the Use of IS AM ARE:-

Before we move ahead, it is necessary to clarify that ‘Is’ is used for the third person in its singular form, and ‘Am’ is used for the first person in a singular form. ‘Are’ is used for the third person in singular form, as a singular or plural for the second person, and as a plural for the first person.

Rules of IS AM ARE:-

  1. If the noun is plural, use ‘are,’ whereas if the noun is singular, use ‘is.’ E.g., They are troublemakers, and he is a troublemaker.
  1. If the sentence begins with I (first person), ‘am’ generally follows it. Similarly, when proper nouns, or he, it, and she, comes into the picture, ‘is’ applies. Likewise, when plural nouns, you, they, and we follow with ‘are.’
